EKOSETTI
a guidebook to sustainable production in Finland
“Ekosetti” is a guidebook to environmentally sustainable operations, written for the Finnish audiovisual industry. It contains practical points on how to make domestic productions more environmentally friendly, and its goal is to inspire the industry to adopt a greener production culture. Ekosetti was published in 2019 in Finnish and in English, and in early 2025 it has been downloaded more than 13,500 times in total.
FUNDING
Ekosetti was developed with the support and funding of the Promotion Centre for Audiovisual Culture AVEK/Vieteri Grant, Audiovisual Producers Finland – APFI, and Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture/Department of Film, Television and Scenography, as well as the School of Engineering/Department of Built Environment. The guide was created as part of Aalto University’s interdisciplinary seed funding project, “Sustainability in Filmmaking (SUFI).”
EKOSETTI IN EUROS
A Peek into the Economics of Production Sustainability
“Ekosetti in Euros” is an independent follow-up to the Ekosetti sustainability guide. The publication explores the relationship between the economy and sustainability in audiovisual productions. It includes a selection of concrete examples that illustrate the ecological and financial impacts of everyday choices made in productions. The aim of the publication is to challenge and inspire readers to reconsider the myth of a higher price tag for sustainable practices—and to demonstrate that more responsible solutions can also save money.

AUTHORS
Anne Puolanne
Anne Puolanne is a film and TV industry professional combining expertise both in productions and ecological sustainability within the industry, working currently as a consultant and trainer. Since the early 2010s, she has worked as a TV-freelancer in roles such as writer and journalist and has been a pioneer in driving an eco-friendlier AV industry in Finland. She holds a BA in Media & Arts (2012) and BSc in Natural Resources (2020), with both theses focusing on ecological film and TV. Puolanne has been an EU Climate Ambassador since 2025.
From 2021 to 2026, Puolanne worked as a Sustainability Project Manager at Audiovisual Producers Finland (APFI), association for content producers. In this role, she promoted sustainability within Finland’s film and TV industry from practice to policies. She collected and wrote multiple national reports worth of industry-specific data, contributed to the development of the NES, trained over 1,000 professionals, organized nearly 100 events, and spoke in 100+ event in Finland and internationally.
Kaisa “Kaika” Astikainen
Kaisa “Kaika” Astikainen is a producer, filmmaker, and sustainable filmmaking specialist, active since 2006. She holds a Master of Arts degree from Aalto University, Department of Film, where she is currently pursuing a Ph.D. focusing on sustainable film production. Her award-winning documentary Heart of the Land (2016) toured international festivals, while Snowball Effect (2023), co-produced with director Pauliina Punkki, received a Jussi Award nomination for Best Documentary.
Since 2018, Astikainen has served in expert roles related to sustainability in the audiovisual sector, e.g. as an eco-coordinator, eco-consultant, and trainer. In 2024 she implemented the Eco-Coordinating Pilot Program for audiovisual professionals at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences (as part of the EU-funded Digital Creative Industries and Beyond -DCIB project). Since early 2026, Astikainen has worked as an environmental coordinator at the Finnish Film Foundation, where she is responsible for the new Nordic Ecological Standard (NES).
